Just like in real life, sometimes it is hard to know what the good and just thing IS, despite spending the 40 or so hours it took me to work my way through the game the first time (while missing at least a few of the side quests) in Avadon. You’re not going to get your hand held here if you want to do the good and just thing. #AVADON THE BLACK FORTRESS CHARMS SERIES#The dialogue works like the old Baldur’s Gate series or, for gamers younger than myself, Dragon Age: Origins. Often more than a half-dozen possible dialogue options present themselves, not all of them with necessarily obvious results. If you need color-coded dialogue wheels in your RPG to let you know whether the decisions you are making are “good” or “evil”, this game will frustrate you. There are difficult choices to make about what to do with some of the prisoners, choices that don’t have a clear right or wrong answer. This allows the story to provide tons of morally complex problems and dilemmas right away – from the very beginning you will be tasked with getting a prison break under control. You are the judge, jury, and often executioner. As a bonafide Hand of Avadon your word is law, even if it contradicts the laws of the Pact itself. #AVADON THE BLACK FORTRESS CHARMS HOW TO#However, in order to do that, you are free of the Pact’s laws, giving you an immense amount of authority to decide how to handle matters – and if you want to make a little extra coin on the side, Redbeard certainly doesn’t mind as long as you’re not acting directly against him (or as long as he doesn’t find out).Įven at very early stages, from a narrative standpoint your character has a TON of power. You are a Hand of Avadon, which means your job on paper is to carry out missions for the good of the Pact. ![]() The forces of Avadon are broken into three groups: “Hearts” advise Redbeard, “Eyes” gather information, and “Hands” perform missions in the field. “The Pact” is enforced by a powerful man known as Redbeard, who rules from – you guessed it – a black fortress known as Avadon.Īvadon carries the authority to do anything necessary to ensure the Pact is protected against any and all threats, both internal and external. Lynaeus consists of “The Pact”, an alliance of five nations that makes up most of the continent, and the “Farlands”, a conglomeration of barbarian territories that makes up most of the remainder. In fact, you should probably do this even if you don’t fall into any of the above categories because maybe you’ll learn something about the way the old school rolls.Īvadon: The Black Fortress takes place in the land of Lynaeus. I’m telling you this right now so you can go over to the website and start downloading the absolutely huge demo (I’m talking hours) immediately. If you fall into any of the following categories, you need to play Avadon: The Black Fortress yesterday:Ģ) You like gigantic narratives with choices that are distinctly in the “gray” area of morality.ģ) You remember Baldur’s Gate 2 as one of the best games ever.Ĥ) You remember Planescape: Torment as one of the best games ever. Avadon: The Black Fortress, Spiderweb Software’s most recent offering, not only signals the start of what Jeff Vogel hopes is a brand new series of games for the company in terms of narrative, but also introduces a revamped, turn-based combat engine departing from previous series. His blog, The Bottom Feeder, chronicles the trials, tribulations, and occassional triumphs of running a small independent studio making the types of huge, old school RPGs that so many gamers say they want. With a tiny staff and a small budget, founder and designer Jeff Vogel operates in the open, with no secrets between himself and his user base. #AVADON THE BLACK FORTRESS CHARMS SOFTWARE#Since 1994, the small Seattle-based Spiderweb Software has been independently producing RPGs of fine quality. You just might need to look a little harder. ![]() To some, BioWare’s emphasis on “streamlining” meant that we’d never see the likes of a Baldur’s Gate again.īut I’m here to tell you that’s simply not true. Obviously more nuance exists here, but in the wake of Dragon Age 2 in particular many fans of the old school began to declare that their type of RPG was dead – in fact they’d already been saying that with Mass Effect 2. What do you think of traditional towns being eliminated in FFXIII? What do you think of all the recycled environments in DA2? What do you think of all the single button mashing in DA2 or all the autopilot in FFXIII? Do you prefer Western-style RPGs or Japanese-style RPGs? Do you like random battles or not? Do you prefer this series or that? Do you like old school or new school? The latest issue to stoke the fires of debate seems to be over “streamlining”. The genre seems to demand allegiance to certain design ideologies. With the possible exception of Final Fantasy XIII before it, I can’t remember any game in recent memory that proved so divisive among the RPG community. They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To, Or, You Kids Get Off My LawnĮven if you haven’t played Dragon Age 2, you probably have an opinion about it. ![]()

![]() The ladies race was won by last year’s reverse champion, Trude Carstens, in a time of 4hrs09min01sec, with Tara-Lea van Zyl in second place in a time of 4hrs09min02sec and Caryn Phipson taking 3 rd place in a time of 4hrs21min08sec. ![]() Thabang took first place in a time of 2hrs39min56sec, with Simon Tshabalala hot on his heels in 2 nd place in 2hrs39min57sec and Sampie Makoekoe in 3 rd place in 3hrs01min54sec. “I said earlier this month that one of my goals was to set a new course record for this route and I am really thrilled to have been able to do that today!” I went into the race not feeling the greatest after having injuries and not being able to train consistently – so this result is amazing,” exclaims Thabang. ![]() “4 Peaks is always the toughest race on the calendar. Sadly, Lucky Mia, who won the previous classic race in 2016 in a time of 2:40:29, will not be running this weekend due to an injury.Despite coming into the race with injuries and 8 weeks of on-again off-again training, Thabang Madiba has taken podium position at the 2018 Trappers Bloemfontein 4 Peaks Mountain Challenge presented by Bloemfontein Courant and realised his goal of setting a new course record! He now holds the title for both the “forward” and “reverse” routes of the race. “I won’t make the mistake of sticking with him the whole way, because if I do that, it will mean that I might win the race, but I want to win the race with a record.” Having Sampie running with us is quite cool because he knows the route like the back of his hand. “There are a couple of guys who are tough competitors, so it will be a big fight among the leaders. This year I have been struggling with injuries, but winning the classic route will be a huge deal for me. “So far, I have won both of the reverse races, but the classic race has always been a very difficult one for me to master. However, he is well aware that runners such as local farmhand, Sampie Makoakoa, pose a serious threat. Madiba, who is held in high regard as one of the finest trail runners in South Africa, made it clear that he not only has aspirations of winning the classic route this year, but wants to clinch the win in a record time as well. That’s why I always try and be on the starting line of the race.” It poses a challenge both mentally and physically. “I guess that it is one of the races that suits my running style as I prefer something that is more difficult and challenging. “The 4Peaks is very close to my heart,” he explained. ![]() ![]() Madiba has always been one of the real contenders every time he takes on the 4Peaks, and he conceded that the race is without a doubt one of his favourites each year. I was just crying for home because it was very, very tough.” “I remember in 2011, ahead of my first race, I checked the winning time and the distance and realised that I can do it as quick and easy as possible. “A lot of people tend to underestimate the 4Peaks, and I am one of them,” said the defending champion. Recently there have been suggestions that the iconic event is not as tough as it is made out to be, however, Madiba, told Bloemfontein Courant that he could not disagree more. The defending champion, Thabang Madiba, is back this year, and he will be targeting his first-ever win on the classic route after both his two previous wins came during the reverse race. #4PEAKS RACING FREE#The toughest 24km mountain run in South Africa, the 2018 Trappers Bloemfontein 4Peaks Mountain Challenge, presented by Bloemfontein Courant, takes place on Saturday at the Moolmanshoek Private Nature Reserve in the Eastern Free State.Įarly weather predictions are suggesting that there may be a little rain around, which will no doubt make the race even more exciting and interesting. The defending 2018 Trappers Bloemfontein 4Peaks Mountain Challenge's reverse champion, Thabang Madiba, will be targeting his first classic win, and in a record time as well. ![]() ![]() (see “facepalm conslusion,” at the end of the page!) The dnsmasq config files are in the /etc/dnsmasq.d/ directory. Setting these DHCP options is not possible via the GUI (graphical user interface), so we need to head to the command prompt. ![]() Now, ClearOS’s DHCP settings are managed via its webconfig interface. You would need to add a line to your DHCP configuration like this: dhcp-option=eth0,66,192.168.1.10 Suppose that your DHCP server is serving addresses on interface eth0 and your PBX’s IP address is 192.168.1.10. It turns out that the syntax for option 66 in dnsmasq is pretty simple. If you’re not using ClearOS the file names shown below might be slightly different, but any Linux distro using dnsmasq as DHCP server should be very similar to this so if you understand the concept, you should be able to adjust this as needed for your own router. I recently configured DHCP option 66 on a ClearOS 7 gateway / firewall. Many routers should be able to support this, so check your documentation or if you’re using a Linux-based router with dnsmasq, read on! So basically you need to add a DHCP configuration setting specifying your PBX server’s IP address for option 66. Option 66 allows you to specify the address of a TFTP server on your network, which is how Endpoint Manager serves configuration files to phones. When you plug your VOIP phone into your network, how is it going to know which address to reach out to for instructions? In other words, how will it know where the PBX is? The answer lies in DHCP option 66. But there’s one more piece of the puzzle that needs to be in place first for this all to come together, and that detail is the focus of this post. ![]() Obviously that’s a pretty general overview.
